This unit was designed to introduce 6th
and 7th grade students to self-portraiture and the meaning of the Luchador mask. Students began the unit by learning how to create a realistic portrait, with the help of a mirror, then continued to create a collage Luchador mask that served as a mask for their drawn self-portrait.
Throughout this unit, students discussed the idea of dual identity and how one's appearance can not truly express one's inner-self. Each student's mask was meant to reflect their personality and students reflected on the meaning of their mask during class while sharing as well as when writing a reflection at the end of the unit.
All-in-all, I was very impressed with the students' results! They seemed very engaged throughout the unit, and met challenges head on.
