3rd Grade Self-Portraits

For this lesson, students in the 3rd grade class created self-portraits. Students were introduced to the formal concept of portraiture and demonstrated an ability to successfully add all facial features to a self-portrait of themselves.

Thankfully, by the time that the 2nd and 3rd grade classes began their self-portraits the multicultural crayons I ordered were delivered to the school! The crayons seemed to be easier for the students to use when coloring in their self-portraits than the colored pencils that the 2nd/3rd split class had to use.

5th Grade Art to Remember Items

With Art to Remember submission time right around the corner, 5th grade students completed a 2-day lesson on personal objects.

 

6th and 7th Grade Luchador Masks

This unit was designed to introduce 6^th and 7^th grade students to self-portraiture and the meaning of the Luchador mask. Students began the unit by learning how to create a realistic portrait, with the help of a mirror, then continued to create a collage Luchador mask that served as a mask for their drawn self-portrait.

Throughout this unit, students discussed the idea of dual identity and how one's appearance can not truly express one's inner-self. Each student's mask was meant to reflect their personality and students reflected on the meaning of their mask during class while sharing as well as when writing a reflection at the end of the unit.

All-in-all, I was very impressed with the students' results! They seemed very engaged throughout the unit, and met challenges head on.

Preschool students completed a unit on creating animals by tracing one of their hands. Here are some of the hand giraffes that the preschoolers created!

Note: As the students progressed through the hand animals unit they seemed to show growth in ability to trace as well as color neatly.

Students discussed details that monkeys have as well as what monkeys do and where monkeys usually live to create a background for their monkey.

Students discussed what details they would have to add to a tracing of their hand in order to make it look like an elephant; students also covered vocabulary words such as Hooves and Tusks.
